Cell Phones and Driving

February 21, 2010

Have you noticed lately, SO MANY PEOPLE using their cell phones while driving AND driving quite carelessly? I have the Bluetooth, and it leaves my hands free for driving. Why don’t these people invest in this? Not only is their driving dangerous, but they put others in jeopardy. It seems like now more than ever, their driving is worse.

A Time to Kill

February 14, 2010

I

t would seem as if all I ever read is John Grisham. It’s just these past months, I keep getting his books, or someone knows I enjoy his writing and gives me more of his books to read.

This book was great. Again, I love and respect his main character Jake. Jake defends a black man who shoots and kills two white young boys who raped and almost killed his 10 year old daughter. All this happens in Mississippi in a rural county, that still thinks very much like the days during the civil movement.

A great book, and one that I again recommend. Grisham’s way of writing never bores the reader, and you will love a few if not all of his characters…….

Resolution

January 17, 2010

The final of this trilogy by Denise Mina; it is just that, final. In this book Maureen the main character does a few things that are surprising and changing in her life. She makes some final decisions. I thought this to be better than the last, but a little violent with plot and attitude. To understand why and what happens, you must read the others. The characters are not my type of people. I cannot relate with many of the women, but again reading is educational and sometimes it’s good to read something outside of yourself and your way of living and thinking.

A Painted House

January 9, 2010

This book written by John Grisham was so different from his other books that I have read in the past. He spoke using first person about his life when he was a seven year old boy growing up in Arkansas; (It was fiction of course) during the early 1950’s and a time of great change for America and for farmers during this era. I loved this book. I laughed so many times, and fell in love with this little character.

A book I think both men and women would really enjoy. I polished this one off quickly. It was pleasant reading and quite entertaining. This is a book that I wish would have a sequel. It was that good with a powerful story line.

Exile

December 23, 2009

This is the second part of the trilogy by author Denise Mina. It continues with the same characters, but what happens is that there is another murder and Maureen again plays detective though she is not and gets the police up and arms once again. I did enjoy this, but I found the first a little better. Like the prior Garnethill, there are areas that are disturbing to read, drug abuse/sexual abused, but it’s realistic and relates to who and what Maureen is….

The third book is on backorder, but once I read it, I will post my opinions.

Garnethill

December 18, 2009

I was in the mood for a mystery or thriller, so I went into our library and saw that they have sections and colors separating what types of books by whom. I came across a book called GarnetHill by an author named Denise Mina. I found it to be an exciting story about a woman in Scotland named Maureen who wakes up one day to find her dead boyfriend murdered in her living room….
I did find the slang from this author a little hard, as I am from the USA and this is quite a British style of writing and way of living. It is very much a girl type book I think, but what I did notice was that this is a trilogy series, and I must then read the others, as this was raw and captivating and it found it hard to put down at times. I will not give the story away, but it was a book I recommend these winter months.

The Last Juror

December 16, 2009

John Grisham keeps you well intrigued and the writing is quite entertaining as you want to keep turning the pages to find out what will happen next.  You watch every character and want to form and settle the matters. Thrilling and a page turner for sure.  I enjoyed this book very much. It didn’t take long to finish it off.
